. plus, the obama campaign is getting a lot of mileage out of big bird. we'll show you their video from sesame street. first, let's get to the news live at 5:30 a.m. here at 30 rock. we begin with the race for the white house. new post debate polling shows the race tightening now with four weeks to go. a new pugh research center survey showing mitt romney leading president obama 49-45 in a national head-to-head matchup. that's among likely voters, people who are most committed to participating in the november 6 election. but gallup has a different result in the daily tracking report. according to the seven-day rolling average, the president leads mitt romney 50 to 45. that is among registered voters. good news for the romney campaign in the state of michigan meanwhile. president obama was leading by ten points last month. according to the detroit free press, after the debate, same poll has the president's lead down to three points. that is within the margin of error. perhaps the biggest gain for the romney campaign comes from that pugh survey which shows republican candidate making huge

, -- map, and sketched out different paths for victory. >> right now, you have 251 points for barack obama. the states in play hard hatch marks and are not color-coded. what is the data that goes into making this analysis? >> deciding which are swing states, we looked at an average of polls. we look at all the polls that are out there, and come up with an average. you can see, when you take all the data available, what the numbers show, and how important swing states are. that is always a moving target. we are constantly getting new information. you will see how the numbers shift and change as the election gets closer. generally, these states are the tightest and could go either way. >> states in play -- take us through a couple. guest: a lot are familiar states that have been a bellwether in past elections. we still see florida and ohio as among the most coveted states. they have a lot of electoral votes and are still very close. florida, at this point, looks to be about hide. you see that florida has 29 electoral votes. if you look at barack obama at 251, 270 is the magic number. if bara
obama among registered voters, 46% even. four weeks ago pew had obama up by nine among registered voters, so this has been a huge shift in the pew poll. the move in the pew poll towards romney is greater among likely voters. romney is surging ahead to 49%. four weeks ago obama led among likely voters by eight. now to the latest gallup tracking poll which covers the last seven days. gallup has president obama back in the lead at 50 to 45. what a difference from the other poll. that's exactly where the race stood before the debate. romney had surged in the tracking poll. the two candidates were actually tied in the three days immediately after the debate, but the president seems to have wiped out romney's gains in the gallup poll. joining me right now are howard fineman, editorial director of the "huffington post," and the honorable michael nutter, mayor of philadelphia and presidential surrogate in this tough campaign. gentlemen, thank you for joining us. always go to the elected official first. mr. mayor, what needs to be done right now to right this ship, to get obama back on a winning
